New hopes for asthmatics

Oxford-based Oxagen is developing a promising pipeline of novel small molecule drugs to treat inflammatory and respiratory diseases. The company has created a portfolio of valuable drug targets centered on the highly attractive class of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs). The lead program, targeting a GPCR known as CRTH2 with a strong association to asthma, has generated a number of candidate small molecules which offer the potential to treat asthma and other respiratory and inflammatory conditions. The company has driven its CRTH2 antagonist programme from concept through several clinical trials and is currently in Phase IIb.

The potential to develop a highly efficient and secure drug against asthma – a chronic disease with approx. 300 million patients around the globe – convinced Wellington Partners to take part in a Series C financing round in spring 2010. Wellington was also impressed by the commitment of the senior management team and the support of the high-calibre advisors.

First investment: June 2010
