French medtech company SuperSonic Imagine (SSI) is focusing on diagnostic ultrasound systems. The company is leveraging a breakthrough technology, developed at the Laboratoire Ondes et Accoustique CNRS, Paris, and holds the exclusive worldwide rights to key patents in the field of elastography. Based on this, SSI is building a unique ultrasound imaging system, combining conventional 2D imaging and Doppler with an ultra fast acquisition mode (>5000 frames/sec) for elastographic imaging – a new method to visualize the elastic properties of soft tissues and thereby to detect malignant tumors even at early stages. In a first step, the company focusses on breast cancer, the No. 1 incidence of all women’s cancer. The same device will subsequently be adapted via software and different probes to accommodate its use in other major organ systems.
SSI already started to launch its first product in Q4/2008 in the EU. After closing of the Series B round with the participation of Wellington Partners, the company will now roll-out this product in all major markets and work on further applications of its unique technology.
