|From the Cloud to Sun|
Wellington Partners invested in the beginning of 2007 in this very ambitious Belgium company. The founder team had started in 2005 with one single goal: to change the paradigm of how IT infrastructures are managed today in corporate and outsourced datacenters. A few years later, cloud computing was one of the hottest topic in the IT industry and Q-layer one of the most innovative players in this field.
Q-layer was the first company to introduce full datacenter virtualization allowing customers of hosted service providers to manage their own "virtual private data centers" in real time. The company leverages on virtualisation technology introduced by VMWare, Microsoft and Xen to create a real time infrastructure which is agile, policy driven and which supports the business processes of the enterprise by providing Processing or storage resources on the fly.
This technology and the fast growth of the company convinced Sun Microsystems Inc. to aquire Q-layer in January 2009. The Q-layer technology will be part of the core of Sun's Cloud Computing initiative and the team will stay with that business unit to further develop Sun´s vision of cloud computing technologies, architectures and services.
