Jörg Überla
General Partner, Munich office

For the past 20 years, Jörg has focussed on his two professional passions - new technologies and entrepreneurship. He spent the first 8 years at the heart of the IT revolution, getting a broad exposure to the new technologies such as artificial intelligence, neural networks, statistical pattern recognition, speech and language processing as well as search. As an early adopter of new applications like email and internet (prior to 1990) he also studied the long road from a technological solution to mass market adoption more than a decade later.

He then became an entrepreneur, bucking the trend to join a non-funded European start-up in speech recognition, rather than taking a corporate job. He stayed there for 4 years, experiencing the exciting transitions of a typical start-up with two people in one room, raising venture capital, growing the organisation, getting first customers and generating revenue traction. The company was sold to a strategic buyer and this was his first successful exit.

He joined Wellington in 1999 as a General Partner, focusing on Software, Digital Media and Services.

During the past 9 years, he has been supporting European entrepreneurs in building successful companies. Two companies that Jörg backed from scratch did more than 60 Mio EUR revenues each in 2007, a third one went public.

He currently advises some of Europe's most exciting and cutting edge mobile and digital media companies who represent leading thinking in convergent media. In particular, he is using his unique experience and contacts in assisting CEOs to go global (EnOcean, Proximic, Retailo, Questico, Truphone).

Jörg, a German native, has an MBA from INSEAD, a PhD in computing science from Canada’s Simon Fraser University, a M.Sc in Computer Sciences from University Fourier, Grenoble, France and a B.Sc in Computer Science from the Technical University of Munich.
